Megan's late winner wraps up Under Eleven title

Published: Tuesday, 15 May 2018 21:38

Wexford Schoolgirls League Division One

Bridge Rovers  0  Tombrack United  1

A late late strike from Megan Hayes saw our Under Eleven girls clinch the Schoolgirls Division One title when they overcame closest challengers Bridge Rovers in Castlebridge this evening. The girls started the game well and never allowed the home side to settle and although they could not break down the well organised Rovers defence, Tombrack were happy with their first half performance. The home side did look dangerous on the break but Tombrack were always in control with Mikayla Tobin Cosgrave, Kate Tomkins and Marita McCrea all going close but still not breaking down the Rovers defence until the final few seconds when Megan's well struck shot found the back of the net, securing the three points the girls needed to wrap up the league title

League Secretary Martin Cahill was on hand to present the league trophy to the victorious side. Well done to Martin, Angela, Rebecca and all the girls on a fantastic season showing great character to go into the final three games needing to win them all to secure the title and that is exactly what they did

Squad: Eabha Gahan, Marita McCrea, Kayla Roche, Kate Tomkins, Mehan Hayes, Makayla Tobin Cosgrave, Emer Roche, Ciara Kenny, Lara Murphy, Rachel McCrea, Erin Tobin, Saoirse Byrne, Lilly Peacock, Riona Byrne, Jenna Campbell Scully

Management: Martin Doyle (Manager), Coaches: Angela Tomkins and Rebecca Doran Doyle

Jamie's late late goal sets up play off

Wexford Football League Premier Division

Tombrack United  1  New Ross Celtic  1

As this game headed into injury time, Tombrack looked to be heading down to Division One as Celtic were leading 1-0 and looked set to achieve the victory that would see them at worst, play Forth Celtic in the play off. However, deep in injury time, Jamie Walshe, who had just came on as a sub, got his head to a long throw from Stephen Ryan and beat the keeper to break the visitors hearts and set up a play off with the same opposition again next Sunday

In a game of few chances for either side, Celtic looked the slightly more nervous but did play some decent football and definitely should have taken the lead on ten minutes when their forward fired wide with everyone beaten. Tombrack settled more into the game after that with Richie O Hara having his effort well saved as the home side looked to be more interested in pressing forward.

Twenty minutes into the second half, Celtic took the lead when Tombrack failed to clear a corner and the ball found its way to the net. The visitors closed down the game once they got in front and prevented Tombrack building any momentum but the lads showed wonderful character, never giving up and were rewarded with the injury time goal which earned Tombrack a play off against Celtic next Sunday at 10am in Shamrock Rovers ground. Well done to Joe, Willie and all the lads as the dream remains alive

Wexford Women's League Division Two

Courtown Hibs  0  Tombrack United  1

After last weeks heroics in Forth Celtic, the women were a bit more lacklustre in their final league match of the season away to Courtown Hibs. Tombrack were the dominant side in the first half and could have led 3-0 as Amie, Becky and Mary B all brought excellent saves from the young home goalkeeper. However, on the half hour mark, she spilled a ball from a Becky shot which Mary B was on hand to slot into the empty net

The second half was a more defensive set up from Tombrack as they frustrated the home side into long range efforts with Ashling having to make two top class saves, one which was a one handed effort which she tipped over the crossbar. In the end Tombrack held on for a well deserved three points in a game where neither side were really up for it as both have important cup games coming up

Squad: Ashling Kavanagh, Mary Martin, Breda Cushen, Eimear Whelan, Tia Byrne, Sarah Merrigan, Kelli Maguire, Becky Connaughton, Mary Boland, Amie Walsh (Katie O Toole), Ciara Ryan, Leanne Kenny

No luck for Schoolboys or Over 35s

Under Fourteen Schoolboys

Gorey Celtic  6  Tombrack United  0

A long season finally came to an end for Bob Newe and his Under Fourteen side when they travelled to league leaders Gorey Celtic on Friday evening where they were beaten 6-0. Our lads played well in patches and were not as far behind the home side as the scoreline might suggest but it was Celtic's clinical finishing that proved the difference between the sides. Bob was delighted with the attitude of his players through a long season and although they were not challenging for silverware at the end, the have shown themselves to be a competitive side

Saturday May 12th

Under Fifteen Schoolboys

Gorey Celtic  5  Tombrack United  0

An understrength Tombrack side travelled to Gorey Celtic on Saturday and despite not having the numbers, played very well before going down to a very good home side. Despite not having a full side, manager Martin Kenny was happy with how his players battled against the home side with all nine putting in a massive effort. Well done to all who travelled to Gorey and they now have two games left to complete a long season

Carlow League Over Thirty Five Division Two

Tombrack United  1  Castlewarren Celtic  3

Our Over Thirty Five side completed their first round of games on Saturday evening but despite a good opening twenty minutes where the lads competed well with the visitors, a lack of concentration allowed Castlewarren to take the lead and Tombrack struggled to come to terms with the game after that. It was probably Tombrack's poorest performance of the season to date but also played some good football in patches and a lot of positives could be taken from the game. Fergus Turner scored a goal late in the game as his resilient style of play saw him break down a solid Castlewarren defence. The lads head to Village FC next Saturday as they look to gain revenge for the opening day 5-1 defeat

Under Sixteen Girls close gap at top of table

Thursday May 10th

Wexford Schoolgirls Under Sixteen Premier Division

Bunclody AFC  0  Tombrack United  3

Our Under Sixteen girls made the short journey to Bunclody yesterday evening and after a tough physical encounter left with the three points that moves them into serious contention to retain their Premier title. An evenly matched first half saw both sides create chances but defences dominated and no goals were scored although Tombrack will feel they had done enough to be in front. With Leanne out injured, Mary Claire played in goal and pulled off some very important saves and vital points of the game as events began to turn in favour of Tombrack

Lucy eventually broke the deadlock when her inswinging corner was not dealt with defensively and ended up in the net. A few minutes later, Tombrack were awarded a penalty, much to the home sides disgust and Becky stepped up and slammed the spot kick home and with a few minutes remaining, Rebecca Kavanagh, who was making her debut, headed the ball to the net to wrap up a well earned three points after a strong overall team performance where the girls had to dig deep to come away with victory

Two big games remain, at home to Forth Celtic and away to St Leonards and wins in both will ensure at minimum a play off. Best of luck Mary, Marie and the girls as they prepare for these two vital encounters
