Saturday February 16th

Under Fifteen Schoolboys Division Two

Tombrack United  5  Ferns United  3

The Under Fifteen boys moved joint second in the table after this 5-3 win over near neighbours Ferns United. After a scoreless first half, Tombrack took control and went 3-0 ahead but then relaxed and allowed Ferns back to 3-2 before the lads got a grip on the game again and eventually ran out 5-3 winners and moved within three points of leaders Shelburne

Youths Division Two

St Josephs  1  Tombrack United  4

Tombrack are making every effort to avoid relegation from this division and this win away to St Josephs will not do them any harm in that quest. They got off to the worst possible start when going a goal behind but Harry Fitzgibbon scored to bring the sides level and goals from David Power, Tom Browne and Josh McMullen saw them run out 4-1 winners.

Sunday February 17th

Wexford Football League Division One

Tombrack United  2  New Ross Celtic 1

The lads continued their good run of form as they overcame an experienced New Ross Celtic side to keep the pressure on leaders Kilmore and well in contention for the league title. Celtic began the game well and it took some good defending and a bit of good luck to prevent them from going in front. Seventeen minutes into the game, Jamie Walshe put Tombrack ahead when he scored one of his trademark goals, finding space on the edge of the area and curling the ball into the net. Tombrack kept the game under control for the remainder of the half, defending well, while also creating chances with Eoin Carton and Josh O Byrne both going close. The game continued in that vein in the second half and Tombrack went 2-0 up when the Celtic keeper miskicked his clearance, kicking the ball straight to Josh, who still had a bit of work to do as he lofted the ball over the keeper’s head and into the net. Celtic played some of their better football at this point and with six minutes to go, a dangerous ball across the goal was deflected to the net by an “unnamed” defender who really had little option and knew little about it. Tombrack had to work hard to keep Ross at bay for the remainder of the game plus the six minutes injury time added on by the referee but showed great character to do so and while this game was not pretty to watch, it was a strong hard working performance that deserved three points. In an overall strong performance, Dane McGarry, Kevin Kelly and Aaron Breslin were all excellent on the day. Next up, St Cormacs at home next Sunday at 11

Gwyn Jones Cup Second Round

Tombrack United B 1  Cushinstown AFC  2

Nine man Tombrack United made Cushinstown second time work very hard to eventually book their place in the quarter finals of the Gwyn Jones Cup. Despite the lack of numbers with several players missing for various reasons, the lads looked strong in the first half and took a deserved lead when Harry Fitzgibbon curled the ball past the keeper. Tombrack had to defend strong to stay in front with the highlight of the first half was a penalty save from Conor Kehoe, followed up by a save from the rebound. Unfortunately an unpleasant wind and lack of numbers proved critical in the second half and Cushinstown scored twice to win 2-1. However, this was a hard working performance from our lads and they can be proud of their efforts on the day

Wexford Women’s League Division Two

Although our Women had no game on the day, Corach beating Bunclody ensured that the women are promoted for third year in a row. Next Sunday they take on leaders Corach Ramblers in Carrig on Bannow where a win will keep their title hopes alive. Congratulations to all involved on their promotion to Division One
