FAI Women's Intermediate Shield
Clane United 3 Tombrack United 5
Two contrasting halves of football saw Tombrack women finish stronger against a very capable Clane side to eventually book their place in the last eight of the FAI Intermediate Shield enduring temperatures of 26 degrees to do so. With only eleven players available due to age restrictions (players must be sixteen or over) and injury, the women travelled to the North Kildare side confident that they could do enough to get past the home side (at least the manager was confident) but this confidence was given a test when Clane scored after just six minutes and was really put under pressure when they made it 2-0 on the twenty minute mark. However, Tombrack continued to work hard and could have
pulled one back when Shannon McGovern shot just wide of the post on the half hour mark. With minutes to go to half time, the women were handed a lifeline when a scramble in the area saw a Clane player handle a ball and Sarah Merrigan fired the resultant penalty past the keeper.
Tombrack started the second half at a furious pace and were back on level terms when Shannon broke through on goal and fired low to the corner of the net after just five minutes. This euphoria was shortlived as minutes later, Tombrack failed to clear a corner and an unnamed defender deflected the ball into her own net to put Clane back in front. Minutes later, the sides were level again when a hopeful punt forward by Ciara Ryan deceived the keeper and ended up in the net and with fifteen minutes remainning, Shannon scored the goal of the game when she collected the ball midway inside our own half and a weaving run found her in the opposing penalty area and gave the home keeper no chance with a well placed strike.
Clane did get one more decent chance but Ashling Kavanagh closed them down and with seven minutes to go, Sarah swung in a corner and Amie Walsh stood up strong to slot the ball home and ensure a 5-3 win. Leanne Kenny and Katie O Toole both went close in the dying minutes but in the end, Tombrack were content to take the victory in a game where the Women did not show their through potential but did show great character to come from 2-0 down
The club would also like to take this opportunity to wish Shannon McGovern and Breda Cushen the best of luck as they sign for Wexford Youths Under Seventeen's
